Whether you are trimming a manicured lawn or slicing through saplings, the same basic principles of operational safety apply:

You should be thoroughly familiar with the gardening equipment, their operating characteristics, capacity, and safety features...
To the greatest extent possible, the work site needs to be prepared in advance of the work.
You are responsible for your personal safety and that of others. Make sure that there are no bystanders, children or pets in the work area.

Safe equipment use depends on gaining a thorough understanding of each machine's capacity and operating characteristics. Be sure to find out what materials a particular mower can safely cut. For example, don't try to cut brush with a rotary mower designed only for grass, because you may be exposed to hazards caused by machine failure. The best way to learn about a machine's capabilities and safety features is to study the operator's manual in detail. You must know how to operate your mower, trimmer, brushcutter and various other products. Determine the purpose of all the controls, gauges, and dials. Learn the safe speed, slope capabilities and operating clearances of the equipment.

General Safety

THE DO'S:

You are responsible for your personal safety and that of others. Make sure that there are no bystanders, children or pets in the work area.
Read the instruction leaflet carefully and note all safety precautions and warnings.
Wear shoes with good grip. Grass can be slippery.
Inspect for damage if you hit an object – switch off & inspect before continuing.

For electric mowers:

Switch off and remove plug from mains if the cable is cut or damaged.
Ensure cables are kept away from rotating mower blades. If the cable becomes entangled: SWITCH OFF AND DISCONNECT before untangling.

THE DON'TS:

Push a mower over stones or debris. They could be thrown out by a moving/rotating blade.
Put your hands or feet under a mower, unless blades have stopped rotating.
Continue to operate a mower that is vibrating. Vibrations will destroy your mower.

For electric mowers:

Do not operate in the wet
Do not use the mower if the electric supply extension cord is damaged in any way.

Lawnmower Safety

THE DO'S:

"PUSH" a mower, never pull it towards you or backwards. You may trip and pull the mower onto you.
Inspect for damage if you hit an object: SWITCH OFF, AND INSPECT

THE DON'TS:

Push a mower over stones and debris. They could be thrown out by the moving blade.
Put your hands or feet under a mower unless the machine is OFF, and the blades have stopped rotating.
Continue to operate mower if it is vibrating badly.

Trimming Safety

THE DO'S:

Use trimmer or brushcutter with Safety Guard attached.
Use prescribed (coloured) replacement trimmer line. Larger or thinner line than that prescribed may damage the engine/motor.
Remove plug from mains immediately if the cable is cut or damaged.

THE DON'TS:

Operate trimmer or brushcutter within close proximity to any other person or animal.
Attempt to operate the trimmer or bruschcutter with one hand.
DO NOT use electric trimmers and cutters in the WET!
